FOR MONTHS GEORGE LOVELL HAD BEEN HEARING complaints about the crazy white man who lived by the river in the northern jungle. As CEO of the Ministry of National Security, he oversaw the country’s military and police forces and was responsible for the safety of the citizenry. He had serious concerns about McAfee’s activities, but his alarm peaked when McAfee confronted McKoy.

“These were people who are normally involved in drug activities,” Lovell says. “Does that mean Mr. McAfee may be involved in drugs too, and they want a piece of his action?”

Marco Vidal, head of the Gang Suppression Unit, was also

concerned. He viewed McKoy as a gang member of the “highest level” and thought McAfee was trying to forge ties with the underworld. Vidal notes that during McAfee’s initial meeting with McKoy, McAfee employed a member of the police force and two gang members as part of his security team. “We believe that McAfee’s intention was to make it categorically clear to McKoy that McAfee controlled both the legitimate and the illegitimate armed forces.”

“When I see people doing this, my question is, what are you trying to protect?” Lovell says. “Then we got information to suggest that there may have been a meth laboratory at his location.”

Vidal concurred. “Given the intelligence on McAfee, there

was no scope for making efforts to ‘resolve the matter,’” Vidal

explains. Vidal proposed a raid, and Lovell agreed that it was

appropriate.

When members of the GSU swept into McAfee’s compound on April 30, 2012, they found no meth. They found no illegal drugs of any kind. They did confiscate 10 weapons and 320 rounds of ammunition. Three of McAfee’s security guards were operating without a security guard license, and charges were filed against them. McAfee was accused of possessing an unlicensed firearm and spent a night in the Queen Street jail, aka the Pisshouse.

But the next morning, the charges were dropped and McAfee was released. He was convinced, however, that his war on drugs had made him some powerful enemies. Once back on Ambergris Caye, he stopped home only long enough to don a disguise (fake dreadlocks, a multicolored beanie, and wrap-around shades) and then checked into a hotel under a fake name. He spoke in his gentle Southern accent but looked like a grizzled, albino Rastafarian. “For those of you who follow the news in Central America, you will know that I am in hiding in an undisclosed location in Belize,” he emailed some friends. “My lawyers tell me there is absolutely nothing to worry about, so that makes me very worried.”

He had reason to worry. According to Vidal, McAfee was still a “person of interest,” primarily because the authorities still can’t explain what he’s up to. “The GSU makes no apologies for deeming a person in control of a laboratory, with no approval for manufacturing any substance, having gang connections and heavily armed security guards, as a person of interest,” Vidal says.
